What is Botox?
Botox® Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical and safe treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles in adults of all ages. Botox Cosmetic is injected into certain muscles in the face to relax them and lessen the appearance of wrinkles that result from our daily expressions such as crow's feet, frown lines and laugh lines. This is an effective means of reversing the visible signs of aging.
This treatment takes about 5 minutes and consists of a few small injections using a micro-sized needle. Within 1-2 days this procedure starts to create a noticeable improvement. In 14 days you will see the full effects from your treatment. The results of this procedure can last for up to 4 months for treatments on the face and up to 12 months for excessive sweating/hyperhidrosis. Results may vary.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons®, botulinum toxin type A administrations were the number one minimally invasive cosmetic procedure administered in the United States and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Botox is not permanent and its administration is ideally repeated every 3-4 months to achieve the best outcome.
Common Uses for Botox
Wrinkles in Facial Skin
Including “11’s” between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.
Gum-Revealing Smile
Botox can be used to lengthen the upper lip and drop it down slightly in order to reduce the appearance of the gums when smiling. The success of this procedure depends on the original length of the lip and prominence of the gums, and is only ideal for certain patients.
Hyperhidrosis - Excessive Sweating
Some people experience excessive sweating under their arms, which is also known as hyperhidrosis of the axillae. For the most part, this can be resolved using deodorants, antiperspirant creams, or gels. However, when topical treatments do not resolve this condition, Botox can be injected into the underarm area to reduce the activity of the local sweat glands.
Neck Laxity & Cervical Dystonia
We inject small amounts of Botox into the vertical neck muscles. This helps retract the muscles back which results in a tightened neck and smoother skin.
Jowls
We use a special technique to inject the muscles in the jaw which helps retract the tissue in the lower face back and up towards the ears. It’s a liquid mini-lower-face life!
Preparation
To avoid bruising we recommend, for 3 days before treatment date:
Taking Arnica pills as directed on the bottle (purchase at any pharmacy)
Avoid taking NSAIDS
Avoid drinking alcohol
Avoid taking Omega 3s, Ginkgo Biloba & Vitamin E
Recovery
Stay in an upright position, no inverting for about 4 hours
There is no real downtime and you can immediately return to work.
Do not rub the injected area for at least 6 hours as this can move the product.
Strenuous activities such as exercising can be resumed in 6 hours.
You may apply ice to the area – especially the lip area if treated.
Swelling or redness is rare, but if it occurs, it will subside significantly within 24 hours.
Bruising is uncommon but can occur and will typically resolve in 2-5 days.
You may apply arnica gel on the area treated as well as take arnica orally if you want to decrease the likelihood of bruising and speed up the recovery.
Bruising might be decreased by increasing use of vitamin K (K1, K2, K4), vitamin C, oral Arnica, vitamin D, bioflavonoids, and Zinc.
